About This Publication...

This particular biography of Martin Luther inspired me in a very personal way at some time during my mid twenties. At the time I discovered that the publication had been out of print for decades -- so I decided to create an electronic version based on a 1958 edition (last hardback publication). The purpose of this electronic edition is to preserve this wonderful biography by J.H. Merle D'Aubigne composed of selections from his History of the Reformation, and to share this publication with the general public as a public service ("for free").

It is not the purpose of this electronic publication to offend anyone -- especially not members of the Catholic Church -- for whom I hold heartfelt respect. Perhaps it is appropriate to note that I descend from German Catholics -- in fact, 18th Century immigrants to America who left Germany to escape the persecution associated with their Catholicism.

I believe the exodus of my German Catholic ancestors to escape such persecution would "break" Luther's "heart" -- that such persecution is contrary to every single word ever attributed to Doctor Luther -- and contrary to the message and meaning of Christ -- to whom, I believe, the Honorable Doctor Martin Luther was a faithful servant.

It is the message of "Justification by Faith" that inspired my twenty-something year old counterpart. The criticisms and other struggles in this historical account are historical -- relevant only to the specifically associated times and places.
